Standardised timing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™

What time was a goal scored?

FIFA first introduced a standardised system for timing goals, substitutions and other events during a football match shortly before the 1998 FIFA World Cup France™ and it has been implemented at all other official FIFA competitions ever since.

The aim of standardised timing is to indicate the time a match event occurs by adding (or omitting) a "+" symbol to the actual minute of the match event as given on the Match Event Summary. The general principle is simple: if an event happens in additional (or injury) time of a period (e.g. first half, second half, first period of extra time), which is followed by another period (e.g. second half or extra time), the actual, real-time minute is registered and a "+" symbol is added.

Examples of standardised timing

2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, GER v KSA, 01.06.2002

  • Goal scored by Germany's JANCKER in additional time of first half:
    JANCKER Carsten (GER) 46+
  • Goal scored by Germany's SCHNEIDER in additional time of second half:
    SCHNEIDER Bernd (GER) 92

NB: A match event in additional time of the second half of a regular-time match (i.e. lasting 90 minutes) is noted as 92. However, had SCHNEIDER scored in a knock-out stage match that went to extra time, the note would have been 92+.
