WORLD CUP gamblers are betting over
£350 per SECOND; more than £20,000 per MINUTE; almost £1.5 million per HOUR;
over £30 million per DAY and are well on course for a record total of over ONE
BILLION pounds on the tournament, say bookmakers William Hill.
'The World Cup is the biggest betting event of all time, and punters worldwide
are lining up to make bookies the big losers - and if England lift the trophy,
then football will be coming home - but bookies may have to re-mortgage theirs!'
said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
Early results have been going the gamblers’ way with a string of hotly fancied
favourites winning the games – the biggest winner so far is a Swiss client of
Hills who has collected £371,000 after successfully backing Brazil and Germany
to win their matches, but a London-based businessman will dwarf that amount if
England win the tournament. He staked the biggest ever bet of £200,000 on a team
to lift the trophy and will collect £1,400,000 if the wager comes off.
Chris Garland from Reading will
win £100,000 from Hills if Germany beat England 4-2 in the Final to avenge
their famous defeat by that score in 1966. He bet £100 at 1000/1.
Stuart Harvey from West Sussex will
win £3000 from William Hill if England win the World Cup – and his wife Diana
gives birth on the same day, after betting £20 at 150/1.
Darren Green from London will collect
£6000 if England win the World Cup –with Peter Crouch scoring the last goal of
the game, having bet £60 at 100/1.
Craig Chidgey of Kent can win £2680
after betting £40 at 66/1 on his dream that Wayne Rooney will score to give
England a 1-0 lead against France during the tournament.
