Wild Birds Unlimited is the largest system of franchised specialty birdfeeding
stores. The company prides itself on being the local birding resource in the
communities in which it operates.
The company's roots date to 1981 when Jim Carpenter opened the first Wild Birds
Unlimited store in a 700-square-foot storefront in Indianapolis. Two years later
the first franchise opened in Battle Creek, MI, and the company grew from there.
Over the years, Carpenter has honed his retail concept to provide unique
products -- including customized birdseed regionally formulated to suit the
preferences of local birds, patented birdfeeder designs that offer maximum
viewing opportunities and a patented hardware system -- as well as expert
information and advice.
Birdfeeding and wildlife watching has become one of America's favorite pastimes.
More than 54 million Americans feed the birds annually and spend more than $4.6
billion on their hobby, including bird food, birdfeeders, birdbaths, nesting
boxes, binoculars and spotting scopes, according to the 2001 National Survey of
Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation done by the Department of
Interior.
Wild Birds Unlimited is based in Carmel, IN (an Indianapolis suburb). In
addition to its one-of-a-kind retailing concept, the company is also committed
to educating the public about the importance of preserving natural wildlife
habitats.
