The Howard Johnson brand was founded by entrepreneur Howard
Dearing Johnson as an ice cream stand within an apothecary shop in
1925, in Quincy, Mass. The first Howard Johnson® hotel opened in
1954 in Savannah, Ga. Cendant Corporation, then Hospitality
Franchise Systems Inc., acquired the lodging chain in 1990.
Howard Johnson became one of the first great landmarks of
American travel and has been serving family and business travelers
ever since the first highways began to span the American
continent. Over the years, the brand evolved from one of America's
best-known families of restaurants into one of the world's best-known
families of hotels. But one thing has never changed in 75
years: the fundamental commitment to serving customers, offering
solid value, and making travelers feel at home.
Howard Johnson International franchises hotels in the United
States, Canada, Mexico, Malta, Romania, Argentina, Columbia,
Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Dutch Antilles, Ecuador, Peru,
Venezuela, Israel, Jordan, Oman, United Arab Emirates, China
and India. The Howard Johnson brand franchises hotels under two tiers,
hotels and inns. Within those tiers are Howard Johnson Plaza
Hotels, Howard Johnson Hotels, Howard Johnson Inns, and
Howard Johnson Express Inns.
