The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has been a city landmark in Edmonton for years. Long known as the city's most elegant hotel and lovingly referred to as "The Mac", the hotel was built in 1915 by Grand Trunk Railway at a cost of $2 million. It immediately became the city's finest hotel and the centre of social life in Edmonton.
In an effort to restore the centre to its former elegance, Edmonton designated it a Municipal Historic Resource in 1985. In 1991, after a $28 million restoration, The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald was firmly re-established in its tradition of excellence and hospitality in the community.
