Stratford City- Jobs Opportunities

An exciting new initiative, the Stratford City Construction Training Project, has been set up by the Stratford City Development Partners (Multiplex, Westfield and Stanhope) along with the London Borough of Newham and the European Social Fund. The aim is to enable local people to receive training in construction skills, in the light of 15,000 jobs anticipated in this field in the Stratford area over the next fifteen years, regardless of whether London hosts the Olympic Games or not. The project will seek to raise interest in construction as a career and provide initial training for local residents wishing to match their skills to the identified skills gaps in the industry. The project will provide funding to commission training courses, run by a variety of local providers, which will be open to unemployed people, young people starting out, and those looking for a career change. It will also be possible to remain in employment and undertake training, as long as the company you work for employs less than 250 people and turns over less than €50m.

The Stratford City Construction Training Project has been made possible with almost £300,000 from the Development Partners and a further £240,000 from the European Social Fund. In the longer term, the overall sum committed by the Development Partners to construction training will exceed £3m.

Stratford City Jobs Boom

Newham Council and developers Multiplex, Stanhope, Westfield and London & Continental Railways are launching a training scheme that will ensure local people are prepared for the job opportunities created during the building of the £4 billion Stratford City project. The Stratford City Construction Training and Employment initiative is the first in a number of schemes that will see residents benefit during the early stages of the building of the largest mixed-use urban regeneration project in Europe. The council will be working with the developers and contractors to ensure there are at least 400 employed construction apprenticeships plus 400 jobs for local people who have completed training but have limited site experience. The council has negotiated a £9 million funding package with the developers to pay for training, business, employment and education initiatives to give people the skills needed for when work starts on the site late next year. The two-year training initiative aims to raise interest in construction as a career and provide initial instruction for residents interested in joining one of East London’s booming industries. It will be delivered with Docklands Recruitment, a job brokerage service the council runs with Jobcentre Plus. That scheme helped many people find jobs during the construction of the ExCeL exhibition centre in the Royal Docks and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
