Chatham is a large English town that developed around an important naval
dockyard on the east bank of the River Medway.
It became a market town in the 19th century, and a municipal borough in 1890.
One of the famous inhabitants of Chatham is Charles Dickens, who lived in the
town as a boy, and would later describe that time as the happiest period of his
childhood.
