Newbury, Berkshire, England
Town of
Newbury, Berkshire
The Town of Newbury, Berkshire is at the crossroads of
southern England. Where the east-west M4 motorway (London
- Bristol) intersects the north - south A34 (Manchester -
Portsmouth). Newbury is less than an hour away from
London,
Oxford,
Bristol and the
South Coast. From its time as a thriving medieval centre and
inland port, to its present position as home to some of the
world's leading companies, Newbury has always been a centre of
bustling commercial activity.
Newbury Town Council was created in April 1997 and in May of that year the
people of the town elected twenty-four Councillors, (23 since 1st May 2003). The
old Borough Council had been replaced by Newbury District Council in 1974 and,
between 1974 and 1997, Charter Trustees looked after the interests of the town.
The establishment of a Town Council was widely welcomed as a way of giving the
people of Newbury a clear voice in local affairs.
